NY HUT Registration: Requirements and Process for Trucking Companies

Item image

NY HUT registration is required for motor carriers operating trucks with a gross weight over 18,000 pounds on New York public highways. Whether you run one truck or a full fleet, proper registration ensures compliance with New York State tax law.

Registration requirements: You must have a valid US DOT number, EIN or SSN, legal business name, and vehicle information including VIN, plate number, gross weight, and axle count. Vehicles over 18,000 lbs (alone or in combination with a trailer) are subject to HUT.

The registration process: We open your NY HUT account, register your qualifying vehicles, obtain your HUT certificate, and provide a digital copy for your records. We also request your decal from the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance for mail delivery.

Series 25 HUT certificates are currently valid through December 31, 2027. Carriers must continue filing quarterly HUT returns even when no New York miles were driven—missing filings can result in suspension.
